One of my goals is to become a polyglot in my thirties. I currently speak German, English, Korean, and some French, but I’m working on improving my Spanish and Japanese to officially earn the polyglot title. After moving to the States, I took a break from studying new languages, but I’m excited to be back at it.
While it’s tempting to track progress through metrics, I think the real key to language learning is enjoying the process.
I want to share some methods I’ve found helpful:
Use Multiple Sources
Learning has never been easier or more accessible. A daily Duolingo practice helps build a routine, and YouTube offers tons of useful content. I’ve used TalkToMeInKorean to learn Korean, and I also enjoy working through textbooks and taking notes on grammar points. For flashcards, Anki is a solid tool, although it’s $25 for iPhone users.
Speaking of which, what’s the obsession with iPhones in the U.S.? I’m planning to get one again to make communication here easier, but I’m still surprised how unpopular Androids are.
Take Notes
Writing things down helps solidify your learning. It’s especially useful with languages that use a different alphabet, as it improves your writing skills over time.
Learn Through Entertainment
Immersion can be tough without being in the country where the language is spoken, but entertainment helps bridge that gap. Listening to music and singing along can improve your pronunciation. Watching movies and TV shows with subtitles is a fun way to expose yourself to the culture. Especially variety shows are great for hearing natural conversations and slang.
Communicate with Native Speakers
Speaking with natives is one of the best ways to practice. If that’s not an option, try talking to yourself. When I started learning Korean, I’d point at things and say things like “이거는 식당이에요!” (“This is a restaurant!”). It might feel a bit strange, but it reinforces what you’ve learned.
Review Regularly
The most important part of language learning is reviewing. Whether through workbooks or writing exercises, revisiting lessons helps you retain and build on knowledge.
